What You Need to Know
New France Region, Louisiana, played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement in the US. Where its African-American community fought and strived for their fundamental civil rights and desegregation.

A significant event that took place in Louisiana in 1953 was the Baton Rogue Bus Boycott. The Baton Rogue Bus Boycott was the first large-scale boycott on segregated transportation in the South. The African-American community stopped using the bus system, causing bus companies and state losses [7]. The boycott led to a compromise but didn't eliminate segregation. However, it showcased that peaceful, tactical protest can work. This boycott inspired many other protests in the South regions.

Another iconic event was the desegregation of schools. In November 1960, Ruby Bridges became the first African American to attend an all-white elementary school. Ruby Bridges faced much hostility and protest from the white community [8]. The Bridge family was also severely affected by their decision to allow their daughter to study in a white school and were shown great hostility and unfair treatment [8]. This event showcased the courage and resilience of fighting for one's rights and became iconic during the civil rights movement.
