Hardship and poverty in Louisiana during the Great Depression [4]

What You Need to Know

During the Great Depression, Louisiana was one of the hardest-hit states in the United States, and its economy suffered greatly. Louisiana's main industries at the time were agriculture and manufacturing, which were both affected by the economic downturn. The price of crops fell sharply, and many farmers were unable to repay their loans, leading to a wave of foreclosures and bankruptcies [5]. The manufacturing industry also suffered as businesses struggled to sell their products in a weakened market [5]. Many people in Louisiana lost their jobs and homes, and poverty and homelessness became widespread. Resulting in increasing unemployment rates and widespread poverty.

Louisiana also became home to many New Deal Programs created in an attempt to end the Great Depression [5]. Programs such as the Work Progress Administration (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helped ease the severity of the Great Depression slightly.
